ABOUT
Owner/Therapist Rachel Sanabria, MSW, LCSW

Lobo Counseling was founded as a response to a need for more culturally competent and inclusive mental health services in the community. Owner/Therapist Rachel Sanabria is biracial- half white and half Puerto Rican. Lobo Counseling is named as a nod to Rachel's son, but also as a nod to her Latinx roots as well as the social bonds of Wolves (Lobo is Spanish for Wolf). Wolves are a good model for what healthy interdependence and teamwork can look like in mammals. People, especially in the United States, often subscribe to a rugged individualism that can create a sense of isolation and competition- this can be very harmful for mental health. Although Lobo Counseling has a strong focus on racial and identity concerns, many other concerns are treated and all are welcome here. Lobo Counseling also welcomes folks of all sexual orientations and gender identities and will provide gender affirming letters as needed for gender affirming medical care.

Rachel Sanabria specializes in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship problems, perinatal and postpartum concerns, and more. Rachel uses a Rogerian person centered framework with all clients, and practices different modalities depending on client needs, including cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and more. Rachel is also trained in EMDR- eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, a type of therapy that is considered the gold standard for trauma treatment.  Below is Rachel's bio.

“Sensitivity isn't being wimpy. It's about being so painfully aware that a flea landing on a dog is like a sonic boom.” This is a quote from a favorite musician of mine, Jeff Buckley. I see sensitivity as a strength, not a deficit. As a therapist, I work hard to help my clients understand that oftentimes the parts of themselves that they view as weak are really their greatest strengths. The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves are very important. They are the lens through which we view everything- they color our world. The problem is that a lot of the time the narratives we have about ourselves are simply not true.

For some of us they have been informed by past experiences and past trauma, for others of us anxiety and depression have infiltrated our stories. I will help you to find the truest and most authentic version of your story. My goal in therapy is never to fix anyone, because I believe people cannot be broken.

My goal is to help you develop insight into who you are as a person, what you value, and what a more fulfilled version of you might look like. I will guide you along in the change process with deep empathy, nonjudgement, warmth, and a touch of light heartedness and humor when needed. Therapy isn’t about fixing, it’s about healing.
